Specsavers County Championship
Day 2
Somerset 216 & 6-0 v Yorkshire 96

MATT Renshaw's magnificent century - his second in his first three innings for Somerset - helped the Cidermen into a good position at the end of the second day against Yorkshire.

Overseas signing Renshaw hit 20 boundaries in his score of 112, yet the hosts lost their last nine wickets for 71 runs, to end on 216 all out.

However, Lewis Gregory and Tim Groenewald tore into the Yorkshire batsmen with three wickets apiece, dismissing the visitors for just 96.

With two days remaining, Somerset lead by 126 runs.

After yesterday's washout, there was no toss at the Cooper Associates County Ground, meaning Somerset would bat first, as they did against Worcestershire.

With Eddie Byrom out injured and Jack Leach unwell, George Bartlett and Dom Bess came into the team, meaning Renshaw was promoted to opener.

He saw Marcus Trescothick (4) depart early, caught by Harry Brook to give Jack Brooks his first of a five-wicket haul.

But Renshaw and Bartlett took the fight to Yorkshire, as the 22-year-old Australian smashed his way to a half-century made up entirely of boundaries, off 39 balls (10 fours, two sixes).

Bartlett fell for 39, his highest score for the county, as he was trapped lbw by Ben Coad, but there was no stopping Renshaw, who reached his 100 off just 84 deliveries (14 fours, four sixes).

He was still there at lunch, but both James Hildreth (0) and Tom Abell (4) had departed to leave Somerset on 166-4.

Renshaw finally fell for a majestic 112, and from there the hosts crumbled - Gregory (8), Steve Davies (6) and Dom Bess (0) all falling in a rapid rate for a score of 182-8.

Craig Overton (19no) and Josh Davey (11) led a recovery to ensure the home side claimed a batting point, but Tim Bresnan took the final two wickets to dismiss Somerset for 216.

Brooks ended with 5-57 off 15 overs, Coad with 3-67 off 16 and Bresnan with 2-36 off 6.1 for Yorkshire.

Come the reply, things couldn't have started much better for Somerset, as Adam Lyth was run out by Barlett to see the away team sit on 0-1.

Yorkshire began to build from there, but fell to 30-2 when Lewis Gregory trapped Cheteshwar Pujara (7) lbw.

Gary Ballance made 11 but was then caught behind by Davies off Groenewald, and the key wicket of Brook (32) fell soon after, clean bowled by Overton.

That was only the start for Somerset, as they then claimed four wickets with Yorkshire's score unmoved on 64.

Matthew Waite (11) and Andy Hodd (0) both departed the same way, edging Groenewald to Trescothick at second slip, before Gregory had Jack Leaning (0) caught behind by Davies and then bowled Brooks (0) off the very next ball.

Bresnan and Coad (8) saw Yorkshire limp onto 82, but the latter was then bowled by Overton as his attempt to hit a boundary backfired horribly.

Bresnan hung around for a while, reaching 22, but when he was caught behind off Davey, Yorkshire were all out for 96, giving Somerset a first innings lead of 120.

Groenewald finished with figures of 3-12 off nine overs, Gregory 3-30 off 13 and Overton 2-38 off 15.

It left two overs remaining in the day, time enough for Renshaw to help himself to yet another four, as Somerset reached 6-0 at the close of play.
