TAUNTON Town boss Leigh Robinson urged his players to make sure that "this is not as good as it gets" after watching them become 'champion of champions' by defeating Southern League East title winners Beaconsfield Town 4-2.

REPORT: Town see off Beaconsfield challenge to lift more silverware

The Peacocks then received a further boost by revealing post-match that the core of the squad who have earned promotion this season - captain Matt Wright, Dan Sullivan, Lloyd Irish, Shane White, Ryan Brett, Ben Adelsbury, Ollie Chamberlain Pierce Mitchell, Nuno Felix, Keith Emmerson, Craig Veal and Josh Nelmes - have all agreed deals to stay with the club for 2018/19.

Reflecting on the victory, Robinson said: "It's a perfect end to a pretty much perfect season, to be honest - more silverware and a good display in front of our own fans on a nice day.

"It didn't look so great at half-time but it was a great performance in the second half and we showed the character we have done all season. Everyone is delighted to come away with another trophy.

"For two months or so we've been planning for next season. The biggest thing for me, and what I've said to the players in there, is to make sure that this is not as good as it gets. We have to keep moving forward next year and that's my job and duty to the club. Fortunately we have a group of players that have the same mentality."

Taunton had to come from 2-1 down to defeat Beaconsfield after kick-off was delayed by 40 minutes due to the visitors being stuck in traffic.

It's weird how how, when that happens, the team who are just off the coach often start better as it's a disadvantage to be hanging around for ages not knowing when the game is going to start," Robinson said.

"I've been on both sides of the fence and it's so hard to prepare properly when you don't know when the game will start, it's almost better just to roll off the coach and play. First half that affected us a little bit but we changed gear second half and dominated."

The Town boss also praised Exeter City loanee Joel Randall, who scored the equaliser to level it up at 2-2 to cap an improvement in performances during a valuable loan spell.

Robinson said: "It was a shame we had to take him off, but at the time we were level so we had to gamble to go for the win.

"He's developed as the season has gone on - he arrived in February when it was blood and guts football, the pitches were heavy and it was different for him.

"Certainly in the last month since we've won the league and are playing with less pressure he has flourished and hopefully it's been a great experience for him. If we get the chance to have him in on loan again next year we'd be delighted with that."

Of those to have agreed terms, Wright will stay on as captain - in a break from Robinson's usual preference of changing the skipper each season - and joins Irish, Sullivan, Brett, Adelsbury, White and Chamberlain in signing club contracts.
