SOMERSET opener Eddie Byrom has replaced the injured Marcus Trescothick in the squad to face Hampshire at the Cooper Associates County Ground.

Byrom, 20, has missed the last two Championship matches with a shoulder injury picked up in the victory over Worcestershire but returns to partner Matt Renshaw at the top of the order.

Trescothick will have surgery next week on his broken foot, while Josh Davey has been named in the squad and will undergo a fitness test tomorrow morning.

There is no place in the squad for Tom Banton, scorer of three centuries in the 2nd XI so far this season, or Peter Trego, who has yet to feature in 2018.

Head coach Jason Kerr told the County Gazette: "I was really pleased with the spirit we showed at Lancashire.

"We have challenged the guys to show fight when up against it and the partnerships between Jack Leach and Craig Overton, then Leach and Tim Groenewald, were great examples of that.

"Leachy is a very proud cricketer and works hard on his batting.

"Abes [Tom Abell] is another who works very hard on his skills. His bowling has improved and now he has gained confidence with that.

"Losing Marcus is a blow. He played brilliantly at Old Trafford and remains hungry for runs.

"It wasn't a surprise to see him padded up in the second innings. He bleeds Somerset and wanted to do whatver was best for the team.

"It's great to have Eddie back in contention and also that we have guys performing in the 2nds putting pressure on."

Somerset go into the match looking to extend their unbeaten start to the season to four games, while Hampshire have won one, drawn one and lost two to date.

The visitors have named a 14-man squad which includes South African star Hashim Amla and young England spinner Mason Crane, who returns from an injury lay-off
