SOMERSET have Tim Groenewald and Craig Overton back in contention to play as they prepare to host Gloucestershire in a must-win Royal London One-Day Cup derby clash tomorrow.

With three wins and three losses in the competition so far, Somerset probably need to win both of their final two South Group matches to make the knockout stages.

Team news

Groenewald and Overton both missed the defeat to Kent due to groin and hand injuries, respectively, but they have been included in the 14-man squad named by head coach Jason Kerr.

There's still no place for the injured Tom Abell, Josh Davey and Jack Leach, while Dom Bess is gearing up for England's second Test against Pakistan at Headingley.

All-rounder Ben Green could well keep his place after impressing on Tuesday, making 26 not out on his List A debut.

Somerset squad: Tom Banton, Steve Davies, Ben Green, Lewis Gregory, Tim Groenewald, James Hildreth, Johann Myburgh, Craig Overton, Jamie Overton, Matt Renshaw, Peter Trego, Roelof van der Merwe, Paul van Meekeren, Max Waller.

Visitors Gloucestershire have named an unchanged squad of 13 for the match at the Cooper Associates County Ground.

Gloucestershire squad: Ian Cockbain, Chris Dent, Miles Hammond, George Hankins, Ryan Higgins, Benny Howell, Chris Liddle, Craig Miles, Gareth Roderick, Tom Smith, Jack Taylor, Matt Taylor, Graeme van Buuren.

Team form

Somerset are still struggling for consistency, having lost to Essex and Kent this week, with a win over Middlesex sandwiched in between.

They are one of six teams on six points behind South Group leaders Hampshire (nine points), and with only the top three going through, it looks like going down to the wire.

Gloucestershire also have six points, but they have played five games to Somerset's six, with two wins, a loss and two washouts.

Victories over Glamorgan and Essex were followed by defeat to Surrey, before their last two matches - against Hampshire and Sussex - were abandoned without a ball bowled.

Tomorrow's weather forecast does not look wholly promising, and last year's meeting was also a rain-affected one.

Somerset made 294-6 from 46 overs, thanks to Adam Hose's century and 90 from Jim Allenby.

The hosts were dismissed for 215, as three wickets apiece for Jamie Overton and Max Waller helped their side to victory.

What they said

Referring to the loss at Kent, head coach Kerr told the County Gazette: “It [DLS] is always a frustrating way to lose, but we were not at our best.

“We were not in a strong position when the rain arrived; we needed to take a few more wickets before it did.

“With the bat, Matt Renshaw and Lewis Gregory showed how quickly you could score but from 60-5 we were always up against it and we lost wickets at crucial times.”

Looking ahead to the Gloucestershire match, he added: “We know there will be a good crowd in and that atmosphere will rub off on the players.

“We have two tough games left [Somerset visit table-toppers Hampshire on Wednesday] and we will give it our all.”

Somerset have lost both openers inside the first five overs in each of the last three matches, with Kerr indicating a reshuffling of the batting order was to be discussed today.
