SOMERSET captain Tom Abell hailed a "massive team effort" by his side after they moved top of the County Championship Division One table with victory over Nottinghamshire.

Abell struck a fine unbeaten 46 as he and Steve Davies played superbly after tea to settle any nerves and carry Somerset home, and the captain was understandably delighted with the result.

Speaking afterwards, he said: "There was a little bit of tension at tea but we were great today.

"Josh Davey was sensational with the ball this morning, then Matt [Renshaw] and George [Bartlett] got us off to a good start and Davos [Steve Davies] played so fluently after tea.

"I also want to mention Roelof [van der Merwe]. He doesn't play every game but he does a phenomenal job when he does play, he's a massive team man.

"I am very happy with our performance, it was a massive team effort and it's a really good squad to be a part of at the moment.

"Every game has thrown up different challenges and we are learning all the time.

"I really feel confident we can beat anyone in the country."

That will be put to the test next week when Somerset travel to Guildford to take on Surrey, who sit one point behind the new leaders in second place.

"The nxt match is massive and big games are coming thick and fast, which is great," Abell said.

"It's a great feeling being top of the Championship, but there is so much more cricket to be played and so much more work for us to do."
