TAUNTON & Pickeridge hosted the Musgrove Cup Charity Golf Day on Friday that saw 124 players taking part.

Despite the weather doing its very best to spoil the day, everyone who was involved enjoyed the day and the funds raised are expected to exceed £2,000, all of which will be donated to Musgrove Park Hospital.

This is the fourth year Taunton & Pickeridge has hosted the competition, which they took over following the closure of Taunton Vale Golf Club in late 2014.

The competition produced some good scores and three pairs returned with 45 points.

After countback, however, it was Chris Rowe and Susan Baxter who claimed first place, Jonathan Denton and Richard Lloyd were second and Robert Hutchinson and Robert Criddle third.

Fourth place went to Roy Miller and Brian Trickey with 43 points, one ahead of Gary Wide and Barry Hardwill who were fifth with 42.

The nearest the pin on the second hole was won by Matt Cotterell; on the sixth it went to Dave Knight; on the 10th, Jack Gooder was the winner.

On the 15th it was Nick Larcombe; on the 16th Sarah Rendell; while, on the last hole, it was Daniel Fallance who claimed the prize.

On Tuesday, the Ladies’ Section took part in the Captain’s Charity Medal.

In the Silver Division it was Gill Shire with a net 73 who was the winner, one shot ahead of Margaret Nation on 74, while Jacky Ford was third with 76.

In the Bronze Division it was Heather Crump who was first but only following countback, ahead of Margaret Blackaller, after both returned with 69.

Linda Fletcher was third with 72, and Marlene Ewens fourth on 75 after countback Twos were recorded during the round by Heather Crump, Linda Fletcher and Carolynne Fawcett.

The winner of the Ladies’ Captain’s Charity Trophy was Heather Crump.

The competition raised £29 for the Ladies’ Captain’s chosen charity, Parkinson’s South West.

The Nine-Hole Stableford was won by Jackie Denton-Cox with 17 points, one ahead of Jane Ledsham with 16.

BATTLE: The Oake Manor ladies past captains and Ros Shepherd's invitation team.

OAKE Manor ladies past captains, led by Jenny Swann, challenged Ros Shepherd – the current ladies captain – to a match as part of Oake Manor Golf Club’s 25th anniversary celebrations.

All players thoroughly enjoyed the day, and Shepherd’s team came out as winners by four games to two.

Jason Brock won the John Stevens Cup on Saturday with a score of nett 65 off a -1 handicap; second in Division 1 was Daniel Dannan with nett 66, Richard Maslen was third with nett 67 and Graeme Gorwood fourth with nett 69.

Steven Hamilton won Division 2 with nett 65, Carlton Mileham was second with nett 69, John Ashton third, also nett 69, and Steven Pinn fourth with nett 70.

Mike Tourle won Division 1 of the Sunday Stableford competition, scoring 39 points, while Thomas Bordier was second with 37 points, Gary Tillett third, also 37 points, and Thomas Robbins fourth with 33 points.

Duncan Hughes won Division 2 with 40 points, the best score of the day; Derek Reed was second with 39 points, Denis Lumley third, also on 39 points, and Colin Harriss fourth with 38 points.

Claire Tough won the Ladies Sunday Stableford with 37 points, Janet Howe was second with 36 points and Shane Bordier third with 35 points.

Tony Ford was the clear winner of the Seniors “John Matthews Putter” competition on Monday, scoring an excellent 44 points.

The next three players in Division 2 all had 41 points, and on countback Colin Martin was second, Michael Parsons was third and David Stace fourth.

Martin Rivers won Division 1 with 41 points, Colin Shepherd was second with 39 points, Charles St George was third with 38 points and Stephen Kay was fourth, also on 38 points.

John Matthews, who donated the putter when he was seniors captain in 1998, is still playing golf at 85 years old, and scored a creditable 32 points in his own competition.

Kathy Salway won the “Grannies Goblett” on Tuesday, scoring 38 points; second in Division 1 was Jenny Musgrove with 34 points, and Karen Potter was third with 33 points.

Karen Mackenzie won Division 2 with 39 points, Julie Parkes came second with 38 points, Pipita Verge was third with 35 points, and Betty Marney fourth, also with 35 points.

Tim Day won the Tuesday Midweek Stableford competition with 42 points, Mukhtar Zaman was second with 40 points, Simon Malloy was third with 39 points, and Simon Mankin fourth, also with 39 points.

Wednesday brought a Bowmaker competition for the Fred Land Trophy – named in honour of Fred Land, who organised Club Night at Oake for many years before his premature death.

The team of Kevin Ward, Simon Malloy and Daniel White were the winners, scoring 84 points; Mathew Bright, Peter Bailey and Brian Davis were second, also with 84 points, and John Byrne, Thomas Bordier and Gerald Webber were third, again with 84 points.

Finally, Oake Manor-based Matt Turner has landed back-to-back wins in his first season as a PGA trainee, with a two-shot victory in the pre-tournament West Region PGA Championship pro-am at The Players Club, near Bristol.

After sharing top spot with former European Tour star John Bickerton at Tiverton, Turner carded a five-under-par 67 to win the pro-am.

Turner’s trio also included Minehead’s Glenn Ross and Neil Mossman, also of Oake Manor.
