THE Winter Open Bangers Championship is the highlight of Smeatharpe Stadium's opening racemeeting of 2008 on Sunday (January 20).
The Winter Open Championship is now in its fourth year.
An impressive entry of more than 60 drivers has been assembled, including the three previous winners of the title - inaugural winner Richy Edmonds of Tedburn St Mary, Darren Brock of Newton Abbot, who was victorious in 2006, and last year's winner Dean Arm from Dulford.
Legendary northern star Wilf Speak is set to lead a four-man raiding party from Manchester.
One of the quartet, Alex Daniels, said: "Some of us came to watch last year's meeting, and decided then that we would like to be part of this year's event. It was full of action last time, and we want to help make it just as lively this year."
The championship meeting also boasts Best Presented awards, for drivers who prepare smart and brightly decorated cars, and there are cash bonuses and prizes for the oldest and rarest cars.
One driver with an unusual car is Taunton's Alvin Jones, who has a small limousine.
He will be joined by a host of other local racers, including Aaron Brown of Taunton and teenagers Ben King of Taunton and David Brown of Bridgwater.
The meeting also features stock rods racing and mini-stox for the younger drivers.
