BISHOPS Lydeard hit back from a goal behind to defeat first division rivals Spartans 2-1 at Wordsworth Drive in the final of the Carling Cup on Sunday.

Kirk Reece headed Spartans in front and they went close to extending the advatntage with Luke Fishlock hitting the bar from 25 yards.

But they did not take their chances and Lydeard stole the initiative with Robbie Davin Martin Groody going close.

They eventually levelled when James Welch got on the end of a long throw from Graham Mercieca to head home. Another long throw from Mercieca led to the second goal, as man of the match Andrew Clark touched the ball on to the bar and it bounced down and over the line.

Tempers boiled over near the end as a scuffle broke out which saw several players booked and Lydeard's Andy Springer sent off.

The day's earlier Mike Whitehead Cup final - also at Wordsworth Drive - was a more one-sided affair as third division champions Westford Rangers defeated Cotford Reserves, of the fourth, 7-1.

Dan Groody pulled one back for Cotford but further goals from Hellier, man of the match Marsh and Craig Plumridge finished things off for Westford. Cotford never looked like giving up though and kept their heads held high.
