THE highlight of last month's calendar at Minehead and West Somerset Golf Club was Captain's Day on Saturday, June 28.
Club captain John A'Court entertained members with an 18-hole individual stableford in the morning, a 14-hole team Bowmaker in the afternoon, a longest drive, nearest the pin and putting competitions, refreshments at the halfway house and a prizegiving reception and disco in the evening.
After a long day the skipper thanked all the members for supporting the event, which raised over £370 for his chosen charities of Alzheimers and Arthritis.
Results: 18-hole stableford - 1 B Hogg (43); 2 M Thresher (39); 3 M Nichols (39). 14-hole team Bowmaker - 1 G Yeates, R Bernstein and J Bird (55); 2 D Compton, G Cunningham and P Beckett (51); 3 H Kneeshaw, A Bissell and B Lewis (51).
June was a busy month with a Members' Guest Day, the Summer Ball and six other trophies competed for.
The Alcombe Cup, one of seven majors', featured 80 players in three divisions.
The winner was Division Two player Tony Hardick with a nett 65.
The 12-handicapper won on a countback from Division Three man Tony Phillips and they were followed by D Oatridge (67) and D Ryan (68).
Other results: Division One - 1 P Fullbrook (76-6=70); 2 A Whiting (80-9=71). Division Two - 1 C Durman (83-12=71); 2 P Baker (82-11=71). Division Three - 1 T Heard (88-20=68); 2 B Chaffey (89-20=69).
The Fagg Cup, which was presented to the club by the HG Fagg Golf Society to mark 30 years of visiting the course from the Ascot area, took place and was won by Minehead junior Tom Heard.
The cup is open to club players and past members of the society and a good field of 65 players took to the course.
Heard, playing off a handicap of 20, scored a marvellous 46 points.
Results: 1 T Heard (46); 2 P Rees (43); 3 J Gunter (42); 4 G Yeates (41); 5 T Groves (41); 6 A Bissell (40); 7 A Dover (39); 8 G Wells (39).
The Weston Cup, a mixed foursomes competition, was won by Sarah Hill and Graham Wells with 37 points.
Second were the husband and wife pair of Corinne and Paul Rees (34), closely followed by the lady captain and her husband, Jenny and Ray Holland (33).
The Bushen Cup featured 80 players in three divisions and it proved to be a very close run thing, with only one shot separating the first four players.
The winner was four-handicapper John Fisher with a nett 69, beating M Mason on a countback. T McGann (70) beat C Peters on a countback to finish third.
Other results: Division One - 1 G Whalley (72); 2 G Yeates (72). Division Two - 1 AR Dahl (72); 2 P Baker (72). Division Three - 1 P Beckett (71); 2 G Hughes (72).
The Roy Sparkes Trophy proved to be a family affair, with the father and son pair of Terry and Ian Groves winning with 43 stableford points.
Second was another father and son pair, Tony and Jamie Gunter, with 42. Richard Stevens and Mike Thresher (41) came third on a countback from club vice-captain Paul Davies and assistant professional George Hampshire.
The Bon Cup, a team Bowmaker with one score to count on the first six holes, two to count on the middle six and all three to count on the last six, was won by Jamie Gunter, Chris Peters and Tony Gunter with a score of 132.
They edged out A Giles, T Groves and P Watts on a countback. Third and fourth places also went to a countback, with WJ Perkins, J Constable and T McGann (136) pipping R Poirrier, S Planty and S Gay.
The Members' Guest Day saw athree-way tie at the top, with P Baker and C Knight (43) winning on a countback.
G Latham and P Wring were second, edging out G Mason and I Loader, while R Lewis and J Ley (42) finished fourth.
The last event in June was the Freddie Burton Bowmaker for teams of three, with two scores to count on each hole.
A total of 20 teams set out and the trophy went to N Grabham, G Yeates and T Heard with a nett score of 132.
K Babb, D Oatridge and R Holland (136) were second ahead of S Gay, D Ryan and A Ryan (139) and C Peters, J Gunter and M Dunkley (140).
