A POWERFUL batting display saw Somerset hammer Kent by 110 runs in a rain-reduced match at the County Ground on Sunday to make it two wins from two in the Friends Provident Trophy.

Marcus Trescothick and Pete Trego were the stars with the bat, helping the side to a huge 291-3 from 38 overs before an excellent bowling and fielding display saw the visitors all for 181 in under 32 overs.

The rain prevented any play before 12.45pm and when the game eventually got underway it was reduced to a 38 over contest.

Somerset lost the toss and batting first lost Craig Kieswetter to the third ball of the innings.

James Hildreth joined Trescothick and added 105 for the second wicket before the former England opener, who had looked in imperious form, perished for 70, which came off just 41 balls and included 11 fours.

Hildreth then added 80 runs with Zander de Bruyn before with his score on 67 he holed out to long on, which made the Sabres 188-3.

The final 10 overs saw Trego blitz his way to 73 off just 36 balls, which included five sixes and with De Bruyn, who hit 71 off 68 balls, the all rounder added 102 runs which helped Somerset to 291-3 from their 38 overs. When Kent batted Somerset made an early breakthrough when Charl Willoughby accounted for Robert Key, out to a fine catch by Trescothick at short mid-wicket.

Van Jaarsveld scored 24 before he was bowled by Trego and Joe Denly and James Hockley added 41 for the third wicket for the Spitfires.

However from 95-2, the visitors slipped to 125-7, with three of the wickets falling to off-spinner Omari Banks.

In spite of 43 not out from former England ‘keeper Geraint Jones, Kent were eventually all out for 181 in the 34th over to give the hosts a thoroughly deserved victory by 110 runs.

Trego said: “It’s been a fantastic start to our one-day season and we couldn’t have wished for better.

“During the winter we have focussed on our one-day cricket a lot especially on our technical skills and all of us trying to be a bit more three dimensional.

“The other good thing is that we are finding different ways to score runs here as well and if we can post scores like we did today (Sunday) then we are going to be very hard to beat.

“Last year, not winning a trophy, we felt we underachieved so we are all really hungry and desperate to score runs here at Taunton.”

SOMERSET top the Friends Provident Trophy group B, Middlesex are second with a win from their only game, while Warwickshire, Kent and Scotland have all lost their opening games.
