Somerset League: Outcasts up to second


TAUNTON CS Radiac and Outcasts defeated local rivals Staplegrove by six wickets to make it four straight wins to go second in Division One of the Best Western Shrubbery Hotel Somerset League.

Hosts ’Grove were asked to bat first and opener Dave Penny top scored with 51 as they were bowled out for 172 in the final over.

Lewis Knight picked up 3-34 for Outcasts who then lost their openers cheaply in reply.

However, Dan Tottle (82 not out) held firm and put on an excellent unbeaten 129-run stand with Phil Stokes (56 not out) to help their side to victory with more than ten overs to spare.

Wellington secured a crucial seven-wicket victory away to relegation rivals North Newton and have now moved above Staplegrove and out of the drop zone.

Newton put on 85 for their first wicket but were restricted to 180-9. Paul Short (2-36 from 12) dismissed both openers, while Max Capadli picked up 4-14 late on.

The visitors then coasted to victory with 12 overs to spare with Paul Short making 80 not out to complete a fine display.

Division Two leaders Ashbrittle maintained their title charge with a five-wicket victory away to Fitzhead.

Watchet went down by 54 runs in a high-scoring encounter away to South Petherton who batted first and piled up 275-6.

And, despite good knocks from Chris Sully (66) and Adam Bishop (53), Watchet fell short at 221-9.

Stogumber made it ten wins from as many games with an eight-wicket win away to bottom-side Mark.

The hosts were just 4-2 after 12 overs before eventually being bowled out for 65 with spinner Chris Gibbons snapping up 6-21.

Stogumber reached their target in just nine overs with Stuart Thorne 27 not out.

North Curry produced a fine run chase to win by five wickets at home to Hardington and West Coker.

The visitors hit a useful 226-9 batting, but good knocks from Bird in Hand man-of-the-match James Midgley (60) and Chris Golding (63) saw Curry home with eight balls left.

An excellent innings of 79 not out from Phil Higginson helped Curry Rivel to an eight-wicket triumph at home to Evercreech.

Bagborough eased their relegation worries with a three-wicket victory at home to Banwell, who batted first and hit 208-9.

Pete Redford then top scored with 64 as the hosts registered victory with a little more than an over to spare.

Taunton St Andrews A went down by seven wickets away to leaders Middlezoy.

In Division Five, Jon Dunn top scored with 63 as Taunton Deane Cavaliers made 227-9 away to Broadway and Horton, who were then bowled out for 157.

Taunton A bowled hosts Sparkford out for 236 but fell short of victory at 202-8 despite half centuries from Sam Dalling (79) and Matt Henderson (52).

Sampford Arundel were restricted to 171-9 in reply to Wells Wanderers’ 184-7.

BISHOPS Lydeard’s Division One title bid in the Somerset 2nd XI League suffered a blow as they went down 18 runs away to Cheddar.

The home team recovered from 39-4 to post 201-8 before reducing Lydeard to 24-4.

Chris Wookey helped the side recover but, when he was out for a fine 75, the side quickly folded to 184 all out.

Wellington slipped into the relegation zone after going down by 115 runs at home to Glastonbury 3rds – they were bowled out for 125 in reply to 240 – and Staplegrove were beaten by 71 runs away to Wembdon.
