Wivey make it three in a row

Somerset One: Wiveliscombe 34, Old Culverhaysians 15.

WIVELISCOMBE secured their third league victory of the season with this convincing performance over their visitors from Bath.

The starting line up showed three changes from the previous weekend. Felix Wood and Sam Millard were unavailable and Chris Corry injured his knee in that game. Matt Ellis came in at prop with Jack Mitchell making his first start of the season in the pack. Tom Chaffey moved to full back with Dan Clarke coming in on the wing.

Culverhaysians have the larger pack and put this weight advantage to good use in the first half. Playing down the slope, they put Wivey under pressure in the set scrums but once the game opened up the home team had the edge.

Tom Chaffey opened the scoring when he grubbered through the visitors’ three-quarter line and won the chase to the line.

Culverhaysians hit back with a Dan Shepherd penalty after Wivey were caught offside and took an 8-5 lead when prop Simon Brooks was driven over by his fellow forwards.

James Escott regained the lead for Wivey taking a scoring pass from Danny Grey and skipper Gareth Bellamy converted to put the side 12-8 up.

Culverhaysians re-took the lead with their second try, 43-year-old Brooks scoring his second try, again driven over by his fellow forwards. Dan Shepherd converted to put his team 12-15 up at the break.

Wiveliscombe took charge in the second half and put the visitors under constant pressure. The game was repeatedly stopped for injuries to Culverhaysians players and they also had two players yellow carded.

John Palk, Gareth Bellamy and Tom Chaffey added tries with Bellamy converting two. Chaffey had a fine all-round game at full back.

On Saturday, Wivey are away to St Mary’s Old Boys, the 2nds host Tor, the 3rds are away to North Petherton and the Colts travel to play Taunton.
