AT the Vivary Seniors Open the Norman Stodgell Trophy for the best pair returned to the home players after a year spent at Chulmleigh Golf Club.

Phil Nicholls and Dai Lloyd took the overall first prize for all competitors with a grand total of 73 points.

They finished four ahead of Derek Moore and Bob Stock, also from Vivary. Jimmy Edwards and John Hughes were the third best home team with 67.

The competition was fought by 100 players from 20 different clubs in dry weather that improved throughout the day and on a course that had been very well prepared by green-keeper Mark Newman and his small team despite the damp conditions.

The prize-winning visiting teams were dominated by members from Enmore Park Golf Club who took first and second places for away players.

Richard Taylor and Peter Prior with a very creditable 68 points came home first with fellow members Ken Woodland and Malcolm Haydon second with 65 and a better back nine than Alan Fellingham and Ian Freeman from Brean and Weston respectively.

The Brian Jordan Trophy for the best Vivary golfer under 70 was won by the current Seniors Captain Gerald Weaver with an excellent 40 points.

He finished one point ahead of the best visitor, Richard Taylor.

The John Wright Trophy for the best Vivary golfer over 70 was won by Dai Lloyd who came in with 37 and the best visitor over 70 went to Hugh Kinniburgh, another representative from Enmore Park, with 38 points.

Kinniburgh also won the nearest line competition (1ft away) while Vivary player Alan Stone was the nearest the pin on the ninth (5ft) and Graham Stagg, also Vivary, had the second shot nearest the pin on the 15th (3ft).

The raffle and the twos competition raised a magnificent £351 for the captain’s charity - The Teenager Cancer Trust - and the event was sponsored by E White & Sons, TG Roofing Ltd, F W Chapman and Hyde Park.
