Wellington’s new manager, Jamie Ward, is under no illusion regarding the task he faces with a side that has languished at the bottom of the Toolstation league’s first division since the start of last season.

Ward, who this week was preparing his side for tomorrow's match at Portishead Town, said: “I couldn’t fault the effort on Saturday but unfortunately effort doesn’t win football matches.

“We need to do a lot of work both on the technical side and fitness levels.”

On Saturday Ward was taking charge of the side for the first time – having been appointed in midweek to replace the sacked Colin Merrick – and he was joined in the dugout by new assistant manager Paul Short.

Wellington put in plenty of effort but were knocked out of the FA Carlsberg Vase following a 2-1 extra-time defeat by Barnstaple.
