THE Peacocks kept up the pressure at the top of the Evo-Stik League South and West Division table with a convincing 5-0 victory over Wantage Town at the Viridor Stadium yesterday afternoon.

It was Town's fifth successive win, stretching their fine unbeaten league run to 13 matches, as they never looked back following an early breakthrough.

Wantage goalkeeper Edward Cavanagh parried away a shot from James Regan, who collected the rebound and laid off to Jamie Short, whose goalbound drive was touched in by Lewis Powell on the line after just two minutes.

A header from Owen Irish was held by Cavanagh, but the visitor's keeper could do nothing to prevent Town from adding two quick goals to their tally around the half hour mark.

A Ben Carter free kick wasn't cleared and when the ball reached Jordan Rogers on the right, he turned to rifle in a cross-shot which deflected off Wantage centre half Stuart Cattell and landed in the far corner on 29 minutes.

Then another Carter free kick from a central position was headed on by Jamie Price and defender Charlie Hitchings arrived at the back post to blast the ball home for his first Taunton goal two minutes later.

The Peacocks' domination was maintained after the break, with Rogers having a volley blocked by Josias Carbon, before Wantage had a better spell but could only muster an off-target effort from Carl Evans.

Rogers was then through on goal but denied by Cavanagh, however from the Carter corner that followed, Owen Irish headed home at the back post for Town's fourth goal on 60 minutes.

A number of further opportunities came Town's way, as Ollie Chamberlain's header skimmed the top of the bar from a Josh Searle cross and Jamie Short fired just wide, whilst sub Craig Veal's nudge past the keeper from the left side of the box just failed to be turned in by Rogers.

A Veal effort from close range was also just kept out by Cavanagh on his line before Town completed the scoring one minute into stoppage time.

Carter's delivery in from the right was fumbled by Cavanagh just inside his box, allowing Veal to roll the ball into an empty net for Town's joint biggest win of the season to date.
