BISHOPS Lydeard Reserves were unable to prevent a bottom two finish in Division 1 of the Taunton and District Saturday League but they did, however, put up a stubborn resistance to claim a point against league champions Bridgwater Sports, writes Matt Whelan.

Josh Parker struck for Lydeard in a 1-1 draw, as Sports were fortunate to come away with anything thanks to an own goal helping them out.

Alcombe Rovers played two games in this round of fixtures - the first a narrow 3-2 victory over lowly Staplegrove Res.

Daniel James, Jack Bodley and Keith Grabbon converted for Alcombe, with Seth Reece and Jack Porter giving the score plenty of credibility for Staplegrove.

Next up for Alcombe was the visit of second-placed The Gallery but they succumbed to a 4-1 defeat on this occasion, Luke Howells with the goal for Alcombe, who finish the season in a commendable third place.

In Division 2, Westonzoyland’s incredible form continued as they made it eight wins on the spin with wins over Wembdon and Dulverton Town - 3-1 and 6-1, respectively.

Jack Millard, Ollie Ham and Callum Butler notched one apiece against Wembdon, with Lee Harvey grabbing Wembdon’s consolation.

Paul Burrows and James Millard both impressed with hat-tricks against Dulverton, as Dave Kelland reduced the arrears for them.

Zoyland move up to second with these wins.

Stogursey made it two wins on the bounce as they beat an out-of-form Tone Youth Res side 3-2.

Despite this, it’s all too late for Stogursey who are all but mathematically relegated, whereas Tone look like they will have to settle for fourth.

Bridgwater Sports Res were the big movers of the division as they climbed from eight to fifth with a 3-0 win at Watchet Town Reserves.

Brad Walford, Jason Bale and Ed Howes all scored for Sports.

Norton Fitzwarren produced a big surprise in Division 3, as the mid-table side toppled league winners Ash Rangers in a single-goal victory.

Lewis Coward was the difference, giving his Norton side a well-deserved three points to secure a fifth place finish.

The other game also ended 1-0 to the visitors, but this one very much to form as North Petherton overcame Minehead Res.

The result relegates Minehead who needed to win to stay up.

In Division 4, champions Bishops Lydeard Colts ended the season with three straight away victories as they came from 2-1 down to beat Porlock Res 5-3.

Lee Hardwick struck twice with Thomas McCarthy netting the other for Porlock, who need a point from their final game to avoid relegation.

The Gallery Reserves survived the drop in style as they cruised to a 7-2 success over bottom side Highbridge Town Res.

The result also confirmed Highbridge’s relegation.

Top team Boca Seniors eased to a 5-1 triumph over bottom club Norton Fitzwarren Reserves in Division 5.

Luke Walsh hit a double for Boca, with Jordan Mein, Ross Chatfield and Craig Sutton bagging the others. Dan Easton scored for Norton.

North Curry saw off promotion rivals White Eagles with a thrilling 3-2 victory.

Lloyd Cuthbert’s double and Ryan Clothier’s sole strike was enough for Curry, who are more than likely to just miss out on promotion.

Galmington Dragons Reserves ended their season on a high as they downed second-bottom side Morganians Res 4-0.

Josh Briggs completed an excellent hat-trick, with Alex-Puddy Chambers scoring the other for Dragons.
