Somerset Division One West

Minehead 2 Broad Plain House 1

MINEHEAD were made to work hard right through this County League cup tie, by a Broad Plain House side who looked the better side for the opening exchanges.

Though Damion Redman rounded the keeper and netted early on, the goal was chalked off for an infringement.

Redman, again lively in the home attack, was then brought down on the edge of the box and Jack Furse’s free-kick was inches over the goal frame.

A cross from Aaron Ireton saw Felix Ndiomo go closer still when his header hit the top of the crossbar.

Towards the end of a well battled first-half a fast break started by Ireton, saw Mike Mullen burst through and beat the keeper to the ball, only to be brought down outside the box by keeper Brendan Marshall, who was fortunate only to be booked.

A deep free-kick then saw Mullen rise well at the far post but his headed was wide.

As per the first-half the visitors started in control - and whilst they largely had the midfield throughout, their final ball was often lacking.

A Furse free-kick opened the scoring 23 minutes from time and seconds after coming on as a substitute, Guy Burns doubled the advantage when he capitalised on a mistake by Marshall, to net acrobatically from a tight angle.

Visiting captain Giorgio Mancini reduced the deficit towards the end to set up a grandstand finish but the home side kept their noses in front and progress to the next round.

Minehead face the trip to Ilminster Town on Saturday for a league fixture.

The two clubs were relegated from the Premier Division last season, so will both will be looking to use tomorrow’s match as a useful yardstick of where the currently are.
