WELLINGTON Reserves braved the elements and won 2-1 in a monsoon at Witheridge in Division One of the Devon and Exeter League yesterday.

The victory takes them to fourth place with seven games to play.

Wellington played as good a half of football as they had played all season in the first 45 minutes by providing solidity at the back through Simon Morton and Jamie Fleet's great defensive work.

Skipper James Rowley at left back brought the ball forward well and played as the role requires too.

Witheridge's keeper had a dodgy first half with some wayward kicks and clearances, but he was not helped by the weather it has to be said, although Chris Cherry in the Wellington goal had a composed game.

The Tangerines were 2-0 at the break as Nathan Thomas and Mitch Woodgate both coolly slotted home.

And although the lead was halved within a few minutes of the second half starting, Wellington kept their heads and an improved display from the home keeper was all that stopped Wellington making it 3-1 as Oli Nott was in good shooting form.

The team looks to continue a run of only one defeat in eight games since Christmas when it receives Tiverton Reserves next Saturday from 3pm
