JAMIE Ward ended his seven-month reign as Wellington manager with a 3-2 defeat by Roman Glass St George at a snow-shrouded Playing Field last night.

Ward was in charge of the side for the final time before taking over at Evo-Stick Southern League club Tiverton Town where he will be joined by his assistant Paul Short.

With most of the game played in a blizzard, Wellington fought back after going 3-0 down in the first half but were unable to send Ward off on a winning note.

Roman Glass went ahead after nine minutes as striker Andrew Hamilton-Dunn got in behind the home defence to beat on-rushing keeper Sam Williamson, playing in place of the suspended Jake Viney.

The game marked the return of Wellington’s leading scorer Leon Taswell – out of action since November during which time he has had a knee operation – and he twice went close to scoring, either side of the visitors’ opener.

But Roman Glass then took control of the game with two more goals – Jamie Johnson scoring from a long-range free-kick after 32 minutes and Scott Johnson curling home a shot on the turn eight minutes later.

Wellington pulled a goal back just before the break when Luke Redrup found Kyle Bassett and the lively striker cut inside before driving low past keeper Simon Venn.

A remarkable 97-second injury-time hat-trick had given Roman Glass an unexpected 4-3 win over Wellington in October and, when Andy Butler’s stinging free-kick made it 3-2 after 70 minutes, it looked like revenge might be on the cards.

However, despite throwing on all three substitutes, Ward’s side were unable to trouble Venn further and finished the game empty-handed.
