WELLINGTON completed their home programme with a hard-earned goalless draw with fellow strugglers Westbury United at the Playing Field yesterday.

Playing their fourth game in only eight days, another spirited display ensured they ended a run of defeats and set them up well for three away games to finish the season.

Both sides had their chances in an entertaining first half with Wellington striker Max Westlake coming closest to scoring after 20 minutes.

He was played in by strike partner Jamie Dingle – a constant nuisance to the Westbury defence – but his shot was pushed on to the post by keeper Lewis Porter.

Before that, Dingle shot over from a good position while Westbury’s Mark Young fired wide after racing clear under pressure from home skipper Scott Holland.

The second half saw fewer chances but the best of them fell to the visitors after 64 minutes when a cross Mark Young left Kieron Kiff with a free header in front of goal only for him to miss the target when it looked easier to score.

At the other end, the hard-working Dingle shot just wide and the game ended in stalemate despite the home side using three subs in an effort to make the breakthrough.

The clean sheet, Wellington’s first since February, meant they had conceded only three goals in three games compared with 12 in their previous two.

Wellington: Jake Viney, Luke Bryant, Martin White, Scott Holland, Tom Ellis, Conor Bryant, Nicky Ford, Andy Butler, Max Adams, Max Westlake, Jamie Dingle. Substitutes: Luke Redrup, Sam Bryant, James Garrad (used); Joe Holmes, Andy Butler (not used). Attendance: 44.

Wellington have a tough game on Wednesday when they travel to take on second-placed Sherborne Town (7.30pm).
