WELLINGTON'S season reached a bizarre conclusion as they ended their final game away to already-promoted Hengrove Athletic with a 3-0 defeat and only seven players.

Despite the fact it was never a dirty game, they had three players sent off and their only substitute also left the action in the dying minutes.

Hengrove, still in with an outside chance of pipping Sherborne for the title, took the lead in first-half stoppage time as a corner came out to Scott Lewis and his snapshot gave Martin White - again deputising in goal for the injured Jake Viney - no chance.

The turning point of the match came early in the first half, starting with Wellington skipper Scott Holland seeing his flicked header cleared off the line and Hengrove breaking out.

When visiting defender James Garrad brought down home attacker Ben Crewe, he was ruled to have been the last man by referee Mark Dadds and so was shown a red card.

Mr Dadds then went on to issue a succession of yellow and red cards - all to Wellington players.

When Holland was cautioned after 65 minutes, striker Jamie Dingle, who had already been booked, made a comment which saw him receive a second yellow and his marching orders.

Nine-man Wellington then defended valiantly but fell further with five minutes left as Holland bundled over sub Joe Parsons and Mr Dadds pointed to the spot.

Midfielder Jack Adams, again already booked, was also shown a second yellow for his comments about the decision and substitution Joe Chamberlain decided to follow him into the dressing room, leaving Wellington four men down.

Hengrove's Ben Bament converted the spot kick and then scored from a second penalty in injury time after Luke Bryant had fouled Crewe to seal the points.

As Sherborne won at Roman Glass St George to lift the title, Hengrove had to settle for runners-up spot and a place in the premier division while Wellington were left shaking their heads … Wellington: Martin White, Luke Bryant, Tom Ellis, Jamie Fleet, James Garrad, Max Westlake, Jack Adams, Scott Holland, Nicky Ford, Jamie Dingle, Conor Bryant. Substitute: Joe Chamberlain (used). Attendance: 52.
