THE hockey season is just re-starting locally, but one player from Minehead Ladies has not only been playing over the summer, but also representing her country at a whole range of international fixtures, culminating in the European Masters Championships.
Carol Matravers was part of the England Ladies Over-60s squad who emerged as European gold medal winners in the Glasgow-held tournament.
The team saw off Scotland (3-0) and the Netherlands (4-0) on their way to victory.
A stalwart defender for Minehead Ladies, Carol also represented England Over-60s v Canada in May, winning 3-0 and she then played in an Over-35s tournament in Vancouver, her team coming runners-up after a sudden death penalty shoot-out.
The Home Internationals in Dublin was Carol’s next destination, where England Over-60s were victorious after beating Scotland.
Carol’s other international appearances have included playing a touring Australian team in Oxford and winning 4-2 in early July.
Carol is understandably very proud of representing England, and to be European Masters champions puts the icing on the cake!
Anyone interested in Carol’s achievements, or in being part of Minehead Ladies Hockey Club, either as a player, spectator or volunteer, is very welcome to attend their Open Day on September 9, at the West Somerset College astroturf pitch 11am-3pm.
