Taunton Deane 1st XI 262-7 beat Taunton St Andrew's 1st XI 242 by 20 runs

HARRY Thomas was the star turn for Taunton Deane as they beat Saints in their derby at the Convent Field on Saturday.

Batting first, Deane made steady progress against a frugal Saints attack, but Thomas grew in confidence and reached an unbeaten 101 while Sam Underdown hit an invaluable 56.

They saw the Deane to a challenging total of 260-7 off their 50 overs.

Lloyd Alley and and Luke Poole took two wickets apiece for the Saints, while Sam Wadham and James Hayman chipped in with one each.

Saints were always behind the clock in their reply and were still 20 runs short when the last wicket fell with just three balls remaining.

Rob Woodman was the pick of the Deane bowlers, taking three of the wickets to fall.

The victory could prove something of a lifeline for the Deane and sees them move further away from bottom club Ilminster and within 20 points of third-from-bottom Bridgwater.

On Saturday, the Deane travel to third-placed Corsham, while the Saints entertain leaders Frocester (1pm).
