CRICKET at Taunton School has taken another step forward with the arrival of a revolutionary Merlyn bowling machine.

The machine has the ability to turn the ball as an off spin and leg spin delivery, along with varying length and speed.

While it is now a staple part of all county cricket set-ups, Taunton is the first school in the area to have it.

Marcus Trescothick, the former England star who is about to start a new season opening the batting for Somerset, is also Taunton School’s Head of Cricket Development.

He said: “Merlyn has been in heavy use across the school since its arrival with players from the first XI to the under-nines having a go.

“It has been pleasing to see the automatic adjustments the children have been able to make over the course of their net as they need to show better footwork and decision-making against this consistent spin bowling.

“This will build over time along with the opportunity to increase their range of shots and confidence with their choices.

”The designers were very pleased with the mats we have here as they provide good bounce and a more accurate movement of the ball.”

The Merlyn will be used during the Taunton School Elite Performance Course, which takes place on March 19 and 20.

It is running for district and county cricketers from under-ten through to under-14 in preparation for selections over Easter.

A number of top coaches, including Marcus Trescothick, Alfonso Thomas and Jack Leach, will be on hand during the course.
