THE Baker Cup got underway this week with a mix of preliminary round and first round matches, writes competition secretary David Derrick.

In the three preliminary round matches Trull, Fitzhead and Staplegrove B earned a first round place with wins over Middlezoy, Watchet and Taunton St Andrews B respectively; these three sides now enter a mini league consisting of three games for the newly inaugurated Davies-Bishop Trophy that will see the top two play in a final match at Staplegrove on Monday, June 13.

Trull travel to Taunton in the first round, Fitzhead will host Bridgwater and Staplegrove B will be ‘away’ to their A team at the same stage – these games are to be played between Thursday, May 19 and Monday, May 23.

The other unplayed first round game – between Taunton Deane B and Chard – is to be played on Friday, May 20.

In what first round action there was, Wellington knocked out holders Ilminster, Taunton Deane A beat newcomers Wembdon and there was a win for 2011’s winners North Petherton at Ashbrittle. Taunton St Andrews A are through too.

North Petherton will host Taunton Deane A on Monday, May 23 in a Cup quarter final with Wellington and Taunton St Andrews A having to wait to know their opposition and thus the date they will play on in the last eight.

The details for the Terry Mockridge Memorial Shield will be determined after the first round of the Cup is complete.
