CRICKET: Hayward delivers in Baker Cup
MATCHES in both the Baker Cup and the Terry Mockridge Memorial Shield have been taking place recently as the main competition moves towards its 75th anniversary final fixture at SCCC on Thursday July 26.
Three of the four Baker Cup quarter finals have been played and have seen two close games.
Bishops Lydeard won by eight runs at Taunton Deane A when they successfully defended a total of 128 and cup holders North Petherton won at Taunton with two balls left chasing 103 to win.
The other game in this section saw 2010 winners Ilminster win by eight wickets at Staplegrove chasing 119 all out.
Chard and Taunton St Andrews A is still to be played following a postponement due to weather on Thursday, June 14.
All this means that Ilminster will play North Petherton at Taunton Deane CC on Monday, July 2 with a 6.15pm start and Bishops Lydeard will play the winners of the Chard against Taunton St Andrews A match at Taunton CC on Monday, July 9.
The picture for the Terry Mockridge Memorial Shield – for those sides that lose their first Baker Cup match – is more complex with one side already in the semi finals and two sides still to play their preliminary round match.
There were preliminary round wins this week for Wellington (166-6) over Taunton St Andrews B (87) and Bagborough (84-3) against Middlezoy B (83) and they will meet at Wellington in the quarter finals.
Middlezoy A continued their good debut run with a win over Fitzhead and in the quarter finals they willplay the winners of the Ashbrittle against Brompton Ralph match which requires a date to arranged.
North Curry are through to a semi-final in their first year of entry after seeing off last season’s runners up Trull.
They await the winners of Taunton Deane B v Watchet in the last four and will play at home.
The Shield Final is at Staplegrove CC on Monday, July 30 from 6pm.
