WELLINGTON Wheelers have decided to do more to encourage new riders to take up club cycling.

The cycling club was first formed in 1948 and ran as a very successful club for a number of years.

Unfortunately it folded in 1952 and wasn’t reformed until September 1981.

It has continued to grow since then, and has gone from strength to strength in recent years, with an active membership of over 100 who ride regularly and enjoy the social occasions that being part of a club can offer.

A club spokesman said: “The club currently gives its riders the opportunity to take part in a variety of cycling disciplines that appeal to all members, including a 10 mile time trial, a hill climb, long distance Audaxes and weekly Sunday club rides.

“However, it was felt that the Wellington Wheelers could do more to support those new to cycling, who will not have experienced club cycling before.

“Starting on Sunday, October 12 we will be introducing a ‘beginners group’ that is aimed at women or those looking to improve their fitness and mileage in a relaxed and friendly group.

“The C group will continue every Sunday up until December.

“The group ride will begin at 9am, meeting in Asda car park on Longforth Road, Wellington.

The pace will be gentle, with a sensible distance that will be suited to all.

“The ride will be led by an experienced member of the Wellington Wheelers and a café stop will be included within the route.”
