WELLINGTON Swords has cause for more celebration this week as one of its senior fencers heads off to Debrecen in Hungary after being selected to represent Great Britain in the 2014 World Individual and Team Championships.

Jonathan Stanbury, who is 61, competes in the veterans’ Category B.

He has been a member of Wellington Swords Fencing Club since it was formed 11 years ago and now both trains and coaches at the club.

Stanbury is no stranger to World Class fencing having represented GB at the Olympics in Los Angeles in 1984 and achieved many podium positions both at home and abroad since then.

Stanbury will be fencing at his primary weapon, which is épée, both in the individual and the team events.

Over 33 other countries and 120 fencers will be taking part in Hungary so it will be a tough competition.
