TRIDENT were looking to extend their three-match winning run when they entertained Almondsbury in the regional league, division two at the Vale on Saturday.

The first quarter was evenly matched and ended with the visitors holding a narrow 11-10 lead.

However, Trident began to open a lead in the next period with Sharon Chester and Jo James combining excellently in defence allowing Trident to build a 22-16 lead.

Unfortunately they were unable to press home their advantage and Almondsbury reduced the deficit to just one goal at the halfway break.

The third quarter saw Almondsbury go two goals in front before Trident rallied again to take a 27-26 lead but that was as good as it got as Almondsbury began to take control to lead 37-33 going into the final period.

As hard as they tried Trident were unable to find a way back into the match and slipped to a disappointing 50-41 defeat.

In the Under-16 regional league Galmington found a strong Bournemouth team difficult to cope with in the early stages and trailed 14-5 after the first quarter.

They improved in the next quarter but were still 26-12 adrift at half-time.

With Emily Warner and Emily Leeming both impressive, Galmington showed they were more than capable of competing at this level with a fine second half performance but the damage had been done and Bournemouth were worthy 45-30 winners. Somerset league, division one leaders Claremont continued their superb form as they recorded their twelfth straight league win with victory over local rivals Quantock.

Claremont started strongly, dominating the early ex-changes, enabling them to build a 16-6 first quarter lead.

With goal attack Caitlin Evans again in excellent form Claremont extended their ad-vantage to 33-18 at half-time.

They took their foot off the pedal in the third period as Quantock reduced the arrears slightly but Claremont were still well ahead 42-29 and, with Jaz Chester strong in defence, consistently restricting Quan-tock’s attack, they were comfortable winners by 53-36.

In the same division Parkfield were up against Abbey of Glastonbury and both defences were on top in the first quarter which ended with Parkfield 7-6 ahead.

The sides were very evenly matched and there was nothing to choose between them in the second period as Parkfield maintained their one goal advantage taking a 17-16 half-time lead.

The third quarter saw the lead change hands several times but Parkfield were still just a single goal in front as they went into the last period 27-26 ahead.

It was a tense affair, with Kerry Quirk outstanding in the centre court for Parkfield whilst goalkeeper Abbie Barker was strong in defence, and with very little time it was still either side’s game to win with the score locked at 37-37.

However, it was Parkfield who remained positive and focussed in the final few minutes to win an exciting match 40-37.

Queensway paid the penalty for a slow start and found themselves 14-8 down after the opening period against division two opponents Avalon.

They more than matched Avalon thereafter, with Amy Evens having a fine match at wing defence, and they gradually reduced the deficit but just ran out of time, losing by the narrowest of margins 39-38.

In division three Newbarn also made a sluggish start against Bridgwater’s Mercury and seemed destined for defeat when they trailed 19-14 at half-time.

However, a motivational team talk saw them completely turn the match around and, with Becky Roulston dominant in defence and Zoe Newman shooting accurately, Newbarn dominated the second half to record an excellent 34-25 victory.
