THREE fencers from Wellington Swords fencing club took part in the South West Epee Age Group Championships.

All qualified to represent the South West region in the British Youth Championships to be held Sheffield in May.

In the Under-16 men’s competition, Fergus McKendry won silver.

After winning all four fights in both rounds of poules, McKendry went into the direct elimination ranked second.

He easily won his last 16 fight 15-4, and then proceeded with two more victories in the last eight and semi finals.

In the final, he lost to a tough opponent from Plymouth.

In the Under-18 men’s competition Jared Wedge-Thomas finished third.

After winning three fights and losing four fights in the poule round, he was ranked a creditable fourth for the direct elimination.

His last eight fight was close, winning 12-10, but he then lost in the semi-finals to the eventual winner, Oliver Strath from Exeter.

In the Under-18 girls competition Charlie Follett only lost one poule fight out of four to be ranked second for the direct elimination.

This gave her a bye into the semi finals, where she had a tough fight.

Follett eventually lost 9-8 to finish third.
