EARLIER this month, the Somerset Wyverns American Football team made the 175-mile trip to Welwyn Garden City to take on the Welwyn Hatfield Mosquitos in their first ever game.

2017 is a year of building for the Wyverns, as they look to complete the affiliation process and enter the league for 2018.

This was the first of five games which form part of their affiliation year.

The Mosquitos are into their second year of affiliation and are a far more experienced team than the Wyverns.

Despite that, the Wyverns opened the scoring within minutes.

Although the Mosquitos replied with two touchdowns, the Wyverns responded and the score was 20-12 in their favour at half-time.

Some great defensive play shut out the Mosquitos in the second half, as their only points in the second half came from a sack for a safety.

The Wyverns offence, meanwhile, kept the pace up, and the game finished 32-14.

Somerset County Gazette:

VICTORY: Somerset Wyverns recently enjoyed a win over Welwyn Hatfield Mosquitos.

Next up, the Wyverns are away to Torbay Trojans on July 15.

This will be a bigger test, as the Trojans are already playing in the league and will be direct opponents next season.

New players are still welcome (no experience, or even knowledge, is necessary) to come down to training every Sunday at Victoria Park, Taunton.

Under-18s train at 10am, and the adult team from 11.45am to 3pm.

The first three sessions are free to attend, and supporters and game day helpers are welcome as well.

You can follow Somerset Wyverns on Facebook and Twitter for the latest updates from the club.
