TAUNTON & Pickeridge golfer Tom Sloman reached the semi-finals of the English Men’s Amateur Championship at The Berkshire last weekend.

After a 22nd-hole victory over Joe Simpson (Burford) in the second round, Sloman defeated Taylor Carter (Rayleigh) by two holes in round three.

He then overcame Tom Forster (Oundle) with a 20th-hole win, to book a place in the last eight.

Both players birdied 19 and Sloman’s birdie putt was conceded on the 20th.

Come the quarter-finals, Sloman defeated Scott Gregory (Corhampton) by one hole but his run ended in the last four, with Jack Gaunt (Drayton Park) winning by one hole.

Gaunt was defeated 2/1 by Todd Clements in the 36-hole final.

MORE good news followed for Sloman, as the 20-year-old was selected in an 11-strong England squad for next week’s Home Internationals at Moortown, Yorkshire.

The team face Ireland, Scotland and Wales as they bid to regain the Raymond Trophy, which they last won in 2013.

Round robin matches will be played from Wednesday, August 16, to Friday, August 18, with England playing Scotland on the first day.

Sloman is also looking forward to playing in the KLM Open on the European Tour from 14th-17th September.

The 20-year-old was awarded a wild card place after winning the Dutch Junior Open in July.

THE Goodman Cup was contested at Taunton and Pickeridge last weekend.

Division 1 was won by George Lee with +6, while Mark Langford was runner-up on +5. Brian Trickey took third place with +1.

In Division 2, former Seniors Captain David Potter won with +4 followed by Tim Salter (+3) and Andy Rhodes (+2).

Division 3 winner was Richard Hatcher (+2), with Cliff Phur second (+1) and Arthur Sinclair third (+1).

Gill Jowett, with 34 points, was the winner of the Ladies’ Jubilee Cup on Tuesday on countback from Margaret Nation, who ended with the same score, while Liz Cutler was third with 33.

Twos were scored by Rosie Spragg, Heather Crump and Senga Westwater.

The Stableford was won by Lennox Heath with 36 points, one ahead Judy Powell, who claimed second spot on countback from Gill Shire, both with 35.

Twos were scored by Lennox Heath, Georgia Calvert and Jane Ledsham.

Tuesday’s 9-hole Stableford was won by Maureen Hailes with 18 points, three ahead of Susan Gawne-Cain.

OAKE Manor Golf Club Ladies’ captain Patricia Brown took 29 members to Thornbury Golf Centre for their Away Day last Tuesday.

Teams of three played a Bowmaker competition, with two scores from three to count, and a great day was had by all.

The runaway winners were Karen Potter, Jill Loader and Jill Nichols, with 74 points.

Ali Harman, Sally Thomas and Cindy Bottard were runners-up, on 68 points.

Jill Loader won the Barbara Cozens Trophy for the best individual score (37 points).

The weather was unkind to both the Ladies’ Sunday Medal and the Men’s Wednesday Stableford, which were rained off.
