SATURDAY saw three of Galmington Netball Club’s teams in action.

Claremont 28, Hovelands 43

IN this inter-club match, Claremont (sponsored by Somerset County Sports) started strongly, scoring the first three goals.

Hovelands (sponsored by PW Pepperall and Son) pulled it back, however, with strong defence and on-point shooting from Jess Bullock and Lucy Low.

Hovelands had a weaker second half, mainly due to fitness, but this was a good start and win for them.

Both teams were left with everyone all feeling positive for the season ahead.

Players of the match: Jess Bullock and Polly Ridgway for Hovelands; Hannah Setter and Charlotte Hooper-Bleeks for Claremont

Parkfield 35, Robins 35

PARKFIELD played Robins at home, and with a three-goal lead from the first quarter narrowing to two by half time, Parkfield (sponsored by Eat the Bird) had a tough fight on their hands.

Robins dug in and brought it back in the second half despite amazing play from Bea Reynard.

Parkfield left the court happy with the 35-35 draw against a great Robins side.

Player of the match: Bea Reynard

TAUNTON Netball Club team Priory began their season by playing Yeovil’s Reckleford in Division 2, and claimed an excellent 53-27 win.

Priory started strong throughout the whole court, passing the ball well.

Accurate shooting helped Priory to take an early lead, ending the quarter 14-4.

The Taunton side continued to defend well, making it hard for the opposition to get the ball in the circle, and passing the ball from defence to attack fluently.

Excellent, accurate shooting meant Priory extended their lead to 29-9.

Going into the third quarter Priory remained strong.

With a few changes in the opposition’s team, Priory had to step up and continue as they had in the previous two quarters.

They managed this and ended the quarter 44-16.

Priory knew they had to retain the momentum, but with tiring legs it was a tough final period.

They fought to the end, though, and were rewarded with a great first win of the season.

Blackdown travelled to play Wells’ Bishops, also in Division 2, but they lost out 46-20.

Blackdown started the first quarter well, winning rebounds and feeding some great balls into the shooters to end the first quarter ahead by one goal, 9-8.

Bishops found their rhythm in the second period, however, and their defence intercepted some great balls which their shooters converted, to lead 25-13.

Undeterred, Blackdown continued to defend well and moved the ball up the court, but Bishops continued to defend and shoot well, as they moved into a 35-16 lead.

The fourth and final quarter saw Blackdown continue to fight for the ball right up until the final whistle but it wasn’t quite enough.

LINE-UP: Tudor (left to right) - Sophie Bond, Rhonda Robins, Beth Lacy-Rigby, Trish Hutchinson, Ffion Watkins, Sarah Hughes, Holly Barr.

Tudor travelled to play Wells’ Canons in Division 3, and were beaten by a 27-19 scoreline.

The game started slowly, with Tudor falling 8-3 behind.

Moving onto the second quarter, Tudor managed to get into their stride more and the goals started coming, allowing them to close the gap to just three goals, at 13-10.

Canons fought back, though, and with their defence coming on hard, Tudor ended the third quarter six goals behind (22-16).

In the final quarter Tudor managed to minimise the amount of goals scored, with everyone putting in 100 per cent, but Canons secured the win.

Brendon's first game of the season was against Bridgwater’s Mars, losing 18-25.

The first quarter saw Brendon get off to a great start, with plenty of energy, accurate passing and the defence getting rebounds, bringing them a three-goal lead (9-6).

Brendon continued to play well, but with Mars’ strong defence intercepting passes and their shooters finding greater accuracy, they managed to close the gap until pulling level at 14-14 at the halfway point.

In the third quarter, the passes weren’t as accurate for Brendon, and a few falls and foot faults on the slippery surface meant their hopes started to slide away.

They failed to score in that period, and Mars moved 21-14 ahead.

Brendon put everything into the last quarter and managed to stop Mars pulling away even further, with both teams scoring four goals.

POM: Maddy Borer. Squad: GS Emma Burns, GA Maddy Borer, WA Millie Jay, C Louise Frost, WD Ally Gabell, GD Trish Hutchinson, GK Libby Binding, sub Beth Lacy-Rigby.
