Somerset County Gazette:

BACK IN TIME: Taunton & Pickeridge's 1872 Style competition.

TAUNTON & Pickeridge Golf Club have continued their 125th Anniversary celebrations with a History Event Golf 1892 Style competition after which everybody enjoyed a Victorian supper.

The “Golf 1892 Style” involved 40 members playing a pairs competition, suitably dressed and using authentic hickory shaft clubs.

A course resembling the original 1892 layout of nine holes around Pickeridge Hill was established for the event.

Max Putnam and John Attree were the winners with a highly creditable 26 Stableford points after a close and keenly-fought competition.

They were each presented with a hickory-shafted putter, kindly donated by Tony Hunt, of South of England Hickory Golf.

Marlene Ewens and Lennox Heath were adjudged best-dressed Ladies with Terry Davidge the best-dressed Gentleman, each winning a bottle of wine.

This was followed with a talk on how and why golf boomed in the late 19th Century and the emergence of Pickeridge Golf Club in 1892.

A lively discussion then took place with a panel of long-established members and ex- club professional Graham Glew ably answering questions posed by the audience and adding tales of their experiences at the club.
