Somerset Women’s Cup
Shepton Mallet 5, Minehead 2

SATURDAY saw Minehead ladies 1st XI travel to play Shepton Mallet in the Somerset Cup, but unfortunately they came away with a 5-2 defeat.

The team showed great determination throughout, with some good play up and down the left and right flanks, but Shepton scored the opener after a quick break.

Soon, after some good play between the midfield, Minehead earned a free hit, and Hazel Binding found Vicky Perkins, who was able to shoot from the top of the D and equalise.

Just minutes later, a good switch in play around the back from Liz Darby found Hannah Sparks, who then passed to Perkins in the area, and she slotted in another goal to make it 2-1 to Minehead at half time.

However, despite the hard work and resilience of the away side, their hosts upped their game in the second half to score four unanswered goals and win the match.

The result leaves Minehead in seventh place, seven points off Taw Valley in fifth, ahead of this Saturday’s game at home to bottom side Weston-super-Mare 3rds.

Taunton Civil Service 2nds had more success in their match last weekend, winning 3-0 at Winscombe 4ths to leapfrog their opponents and sit just two points behind Minehead.

This Saturday they host fourth-placed ECV Hornets 2nds.
