THERE was double medal success for the Somerset athletes at Gold Coast 2018 today, with David Luckman claiming his second gold of these Commonwealth Games in the shooting, and Maddie Hinch helping the England women's hockey team to bronze.

Taunton-born Luckman had won gold in both the Queen's Prize pairs and individual events at Glasgow 2014, and he repeated that feat in Australia.

Having already won the pairs alongside Parag Patel, he went into the third and final round of the individual event in second place in the rankings, behind Jim Bailey of Australia.

Luckman saved his best for last, overhauling the Australian and setting a new Commonwealth Games record with his score of 404 - 49v.

Unfortunately fellow Somerset shooter Ed Ling (Wellington) could not emulate his medal achievement, despite qualifying for the men's trap finals in third spot.

When it came to the finals, he was eliminated just short of the podium, finishing fourth (as his wife Abbey had in the women's trap the day before) with a score of 28, as Welshman Michael Wixey won gold.

But there was medal success over at the hockey, as England women thrashed India - who they'd lost 2-1 against the group stage - in the bronze medal match.

England picked themselves up from their semi-final shootout to New Zealand and won 6-0, thanks to Sophie Bray's hat-trick and further goals from Hollie Pearne-Webb, Laura Unsworth and Alex Danson.

They had started slowly, though, with goalkeeper (and ex-King's College student) Hinch having to make several good saves before Bray put the game beyond India.

Hinch said afterwards: "For a few of us this was a disappointment [winning bronze] but in the grand scheme of things I think it's important that we've won today and it sets us up for the summer.

"The older you get the more you are unsure it could be your last Commonwealth Games so you have to take advantage.

"I think there's a few key things around our ability to convert all our chances, but that's something we can work on.

"There were times throughout the tournament where we were not as sound as we have been, and as we went on we found we did that better."

With Luckman and Hinch's medals added to the bronzes collected by Rob Paxton and Louis Ridout in lawn bowls, it's been a successful Games for the Somerset contingent in Team England.

They can certainly enjoy tomorrow's closing ceremony knowing that they have done the county proud on the Gold Coast.
