COMPUSURE was a key factor in Taunton Titans’ last-gasp 22-19 victory at Dorking on Saturday, according to their head coach, Tony Yapp.

Gary Kingdom’s 79th minute penalty secured a dramatic win for the Titans - who were far from their best in Surrey – after Dorking had levelled the scores with a converted try four minutes from time.

The result keeps Titans hot the heels of Old Albanian and Cambridge at the top of National Two South - and head coach Yapp also praised his side’s game management in the closing stages.

He said: “It was a big relief to come away from Dorking on Saturday with the win - as we expected they upped their game and came out for 80 minutes and played with a real passion and determination.

“We had control of the game for large periods but due to the dogged nature of Dorking’s defence and our inability to hold onto the ball for more than a few phases, it meant that we could never really cut loose and pull away.

“It was down to our scrum dominance that we were able to get ourselves out of trouble and was the main reason for our win.

“A big positive for me though was while down to 14 men with the scores tied at 19 all, with only a few minutes left, we didn't panic and were able to keep the ball for long enough to get a penalty that Gary Kingdom stepped up and knocked over.

“But even then we had to defend the last few minutes in our 22 before again our scrum came to the rescue.

“Looking forward it's so important that we learn from the game against Dorking because we are going to be faced with similar challenges over the next few weeks and another performance like that is likely to result in a loss.”
