TAUNTON RFC winger Ollie Rice was understandably jubilant after his remarkable six-try haul against Wimbledon at the Commsplus Stadium.

Rice scored nearly half of Taunton's 66 points in their thumping victory, and admitted to being somewhat surprised by how the afternoon unfolded.

Speaking after the match, he said: "I can’t believe it – I’ve never scored more than three in a game before. It was a hell of a result and good for the team."

There was a neat symmetry to Rice's display, with three tries coming in each half, but the opening period was hard-fought and ended with the Titans 26-15 ahead before they pulled away after the interval.

“In the first half we were a bit off, but the coaches had a word at half-time and we switched it on second half. We started moving the ball quicker and scoring some tries," Rice said.

“It was tight early on but we were playing into their hands, and we knew that, so we came out with a different mindset. We didn’t take them lightly and it was hard work out there, so it was a good result."

Rice joined Taunton in the summer from Exmouth, who were relegated from National 2 South last season, and is enjoying competing at the other end of the table.

"It's been a good season so far, and today has topped it off - I couldn't believe what was going on when I was out there," he said.
