Taunton U17s made the trip to Bristol on Sunday to play in the South-West final of rugby's prestigious National Bowl competition.

Thornbury Broncos had seen off Milton Keynes and Torquay Athletic in previous rounds.

In a thrilling, full-blooded encounter Broncos struck first with an unconverted try after just three minutes.

But Taunton swung the ball wide for Sam Donegan to run in the equaliser after 15 minutes. Billy Massingham converted, edging Taunton into a 7-5 lead.

In a game-breaking moment, Adam Conybeare took a quick tap and go option to weave his way home for Taunton’s second. Massingham again added the extras.

At half-time Taunton led Thornbury 14-5.

After the restart the Broncos stepped up the pressure and eventually broke free to run in their second unconverted try and then a third unconverted try to take the lead.

But Taunton raised their game and were rewarded with a penalty out wide close to the touchline.

Massingham stepped forward and, showing ice-cool nerve, calmly slotted home the winning score taking Taunton 17-15 ahead with moments to play.

Taunton travel to Henley on April 22 to face London-based Heathfield & Waldron in the national semi-final.

The winner plays in the national finals at Worcester Warriors Sixways Stadium on May 6.

Taunton officials are offering a sponsorship opportunity to a local business to support the team with a celebration strip for the prestigious game and – it is hoped – the final!
