WELLINGTON dominated a fast and furious encounter with Tavistock in Tribute Western Counties West as they ran in nine tries on their way to a 58-24 victory.

There were some radical decisions made by the new coaching team in the starting line up with back row man Danny Lee playing in the centre, new wing recruit Severo Vuti appearing at open side flanker and Dan Smythe-Moore moving up to take the hooking spot.

New recruit Dan Johnson, recently signed from Taunton, was slotted in at second row on his first team debut with Anthony Gill being restored to partner him.

Chris Kitto and Hayden Johnson completing the back row with Vuti while other changes saw the return of wingers Matt Taylor and Ben Gamlin with Paddy Dean and Robin Trott swapping the centre and fly half positions. Early home attacks were repulsed by the visitors who were the first to score in the sixth minute when slick handling aided by some indifferent home tackling allowed centre Doug Lloyd to go over with fly half Rob Goldsby-West converting.

Wellington immediately hit back when a Mark Nichols break was followed by a ruck which eventually saw the ball passed to Vuti wide out who ran round the cover to score under the posts. Nichols added the extra two points with the conversion.

Another quick Tavistock break resulted in a penalty which Goldsby-West gratefully completed but this was again quickly cancelled out with a Nichols penalty.

Despite applying concerted pressure it was not until towards the end of the half that classy home scrum half Will Brewer put the home side in front for the first time as he picked up at a ruck on the visitors try line and nipped through a gap with Nichols converting.

The away side upped their efforts and again threatened for a while but were denied by some sturdy defence before Vuti scored the try of the match.

Captain Robin Trott broke and found Vuti on the halfway line and his delightfully weighted chip sat up just enough for him to collect and ghost past the struggling defence for his second in front of the delighted clubhouse corner crowd. The conversion was missed but it was clear the Red and Blacks had the bit firmly between their teeth and were in no mood to let go.

They stretched their lead just before the half when Trott made a break through the middle to score under the posts leaving Nichols with a simple conversion.

Lee was extremely unlucky from the restart as a defender just managed to tap tackle him with the try line at his mercy.

The respite was short-lived for the visitors however as they were mercilessly shunted off their own ball and at a second scrum and were relentlessly trundled backwards until Kitto judged his pick up and dive perfectly for the next try and inevitable conversion.

The Chiefs pack capitalised on their dominance as they once more won a Tavy scrum and this time Dean completed the move following the breakdown with an unconverted try.

Vuti completed an outstanding hat trick as he broke through, dumped a tackler with a fearsome hand off and outsprinted the chasing defenders.

Next up was Gamlin who also won a chase to his chip to score an unconverted try in the corner.

The final home score fell to replacement back Ali Taylor following good work by Gill in the loose which gave Nichols his sixth successful kick of the day.

During the final phase of the match the visitors restored some pride as they ran in tries by Josh Sutton and Lloyd, both converted by Goldsby-West, as things went a little awry for the home side.

Gill was yellow carded for charging round the side of a ruck and Johnson for a mistimed tackle on a kick receiver.
