WELLINGTON U-18s played out a tight, even contest played on a small, firm pitch against their Weston-Super-Mare counterparts but came out on top 12-7.

Weston started the brighter and dominated the first 15 minutes, using their large forwards and utilising the elements to great effect.

However the Red & Blacks stood firm and withstood this early onslaught from the home team.

It was against the run of play when Wellington took the lead through captain Jack Richards who was outstanding all game.

He stole the ball from Weston on Wellington’s 22 metre line and went on a galloping run up field.

Just a few metres from the try line he ran out of puff but flanker Cam Mathews was on his shoulder to take the pass and crash over near the corner flag.

Full-back Tom Kelvey converted from the touchline to make the score 7-0.

Weston once again went on the attack after this setback and scored a try of their own after a loose line-out followed by poor tackling from Wellington.

The conversion from the touch line was successful, making the score 7-7 at half time.

Wellington rang the changes at the interval, bringing more the experienced members of the squad into the fray.

These changes saw the Red & Blacks increase the physicality and continuity which the home side, at times, found difficult to deal with.

Despite dominating territory, playing the better rugby and creating numerous gilt-edged scoring chances, it wasn’t until 15 minutes from the end of the game that the Red & Blacks eventually crossed Weston’s line to score.

Centre Chris Batts dotted down wide out after a fine attacking move involving forwards and backs.

Tom Hawkins’ conversion attempt from the touchline hit the upright making the score leavin g the score 12-7.

Weston tried their utmost to get back on terms but fine defence by the Red & Blacks kept the home side at bay and the remaining minutes of the game were played out around the half-way line.

Wellington’s next game is at home on January 3 when they entertain Nailsea & Backwell.
