Wellington 94, Pirate Amateurs 7

THE R&Bs welcomed Pirate Amateurs to The Athletic Ground last Saturday and as the score would suggest this was a difficult afternoon for the Cornish visitors, writes Allyn Chetland.

Buoyed by recent encouraging performances The R&Bs went into the match full of confidence going onto dominate all aspects of the game.

The Pirates tried their best to stem the onslaught of tries but their efforts proved to be in vain.

However, to The Pirates immense credit they never gave up and fully deserved to score their try.

For The R&Bs it was pleasing to see all the patterns and moves practised on the training paddock being put into operation on match day.

Young Ethan Stalker made his 1st XV debut on the wing, however a major concern for The R&Bs is hooker Joe Dyke had to leave the field 20 minutes into the game with a back injury being replaced by Liam Phillips.

For sure there will be sterner tests to come, starting this coming Saturday when the team travel to Plymouth to take on The Argum.

The R&B’s try scores were: George Hodgson (5), Brad Field (4), Liam Phillips (3) with Ben Gamlin & Chris Kitto scoring one each - Alex Davey kicked 12 conversions.

Wellington RFC would like to thank Dave & Julia Wicks for sponsoring the match and Steve Maidment for sponsoring the match ball.

Team: J.Rowlands, J.Dyke, J.Hancock, R.Walker, H.Ramsay, C.Kitto, D.Lee, M.Norman, T.Jenkinson, P.Jarman (c), G,Hodgson, B,Gamlin, B,Field, C.Batts, A.Davey, L.Wadham, E.Stalker, L.Phillips

Elsewhere, Wellington's 2nd XV eased to a 63-3 win at Wyvern in Somerset One.

Wellington host Morganians on Saturday, while Wyvern head to Crewkerne.

Somerset Premier
Wiveliscombe 33, Imperial 10

WIVELISCOMBE produced a workman like performance against a team who, like their hosts, were yet to taste defeat in the Somerset Premier League this season, writes Roger Bellamy.

Playing up the slope in the first half, Wivey struggled to penetrate the stubborn Imperial defence but eventually created a chance for Dan Quick to convert a penalty after Imperial failed to release in the tackle.

Imperial's response was a well taken try from centre Glynn Hickory, who took the ball at pace to breach the home defence to put Imperial in the lead, though the conversion was missed.

Wiveliscombe were to go on and take their scoring opportunities when they came as Imperial turned the ball over on several occasions allowing the home team to regroup.

Home prop Matt Ellis crossed for a try after good driving play from his fellow forwards - Quick converted and added two penalties to give Wivey a 16-5 half time lead.

A second try from Ellis followed as he scored from a set penalty move for a try converted by Quick, who also slotted a penalty to hand Wivey a comfortable 26-5 lead with quarter of the game to go.

Imperial crossed for their second try through number eight Lee Jones, who forced his way over in the corner, but Wiveliscombe went on to secure a hard earned victory with a third try courtesy of John Kerr, who was making his first appearance of the season.

Quick converted to bring his tally to 17 points for the game as Wivey closed out a 33-10 win.

Somerset Two South

WIVELISCOMBE'S second XV carried on their good form from last weekend to gain a convincing victory over West Somerset neighbours Minehead as the combination of experienced players and youth from the visitors proved to strong for the home team.

Ben Woollaston was on the scoreboard again, crossing for three tries after his try in last week's match.

Wiveliscombe climb to a mid table position after this victory.
