Wellington could easily have won this game but the one ingredient missing was the final pass.

Their intentions were crystal clear in the first ten minutes – run the ball and camp on St Austell’s line – but stout defence and missed opportunities cost Wellington in the end.

The game was even for most of the first half, other than a missed penalty by St Austell’s number 10 Ben Shepherd and looked like ending even but a lost ball against the head led to a break and home centre Ian Venner running under the post leaving an easy kick for the conversion leaving Wellington 7-0 down.

The second half started the same as the first with Wellington taking the game to the home side with runs from deep by Mark Nichols and Robin Trott backed by Tim Jenkinson and Luke Brown.

It looked like Wellington would claim the try they deserved but again the final killer pass and the chances went begging.

A penalty finally put points on the board for Wellington kicked by Mark Nichols.

With the game opening up it was the home side who scored next with another penalty by their number 10.

This seemed to spur on Wellington as they took the game to the home team and pinned them in their half with strong runs by Craig Shore and Loyd Willcocks battering the home defence but again the final pass went astray.

Against the run of play St Austell where awarded a penalty under the posts which the number 10 duly kicked.

Wellington gave their all with ten minutes to go but could not break the home defence apart from another Mark Nichols penalty.
