Somerset Premier

Wiveliscombe 27, Weston-s-Mare 24

WIVELISCOMBE secured their fourth league victory of the season with this nail-biting victory over a useful Weston outfit.

The home team started well enough and had the edge during the opening quarter, going 3-0 up through a Dan Quick penalty.

Wivey had opportunities to add to their score but failed to finish promising moves in good areas in their opponents' 22.

Weston began to show their potential with both forwards and backs playing some good rugby.

Fly-half George Chapman put his team in front with a penalty after the home team's threes were caught offside.

He put Weston in front shortly afterwards with a second penalty when the referee again penalised Wivey for a similar offence.

Wivey's game became disjointed and the visitors' forwards gained the upper hand, especially in the driving mauls which resulted in James Matthews scoring a hat-trick of tries.

Chapman failed with the three conversions leaving the score at 21-3 to Weston.

Playing down the slope in the second half, Wivey continued to struggle to put any continuity in their game with Weston looking the more likely to score which they did with a third penalty from George Chapman with Wivey again caught offside.

Wivey looked in trouble with 20 minutes of the game remaining but, to their credit, they kept to their game plan and the visitors started to tire.

Centre George Rowe started to find holes in the visitors' defence allowing Wivey to pressure the line.

Second row Elliott Clarke pounced on a loose ball to score Wivey's first try of the match and Rowe scored their second try shortly afterwards to put Wivey in touch with their opponents.

Weston were now struggling to contain their hosts, being pinned on their own line.

This gave scrum-half Hugh Kelly the opportunity to dive over from a maul to score a try bringing Wiveliscombe within six points of Weston at 24-18.

Dan Quick kicked his first conversion of the game and the home team now were in with a chance of a most unlikely victory.

With minutes of the game remaining, they duly gained a bonus-point win when back rower Lee Jeremiah, who had an outstanding second-half, dived over for Wivey's fourth try which Quick converted.

Wivey move up to fourth position in Somerset Premier League with their fourth victory of the season.

WIVELISCOMBE's 2nd XV travelled to Bridgwater for this encounter.

The visitors had to make changes from the previous match but competed well throughout the game.

Wivey's points came from a George Hale try and, despite the defeat, they stay in fifth place in their league.
