Tribute Somerset 1: Nailsea & Backwell 24, Wiveliscombe 10

NAILSEA and Backwell just took the honours in this Somerset 1 top-of-the-table clash.

The home side had the better of the first half playing down the slope but the visitors limited them to two tries.

Home fly half Tony Hill opened the scoring with a well worked try which he also converted. Winger Ally O’Connor finished off a good move to score the home side’s second, Hill again converted.

Wivey had their moments in the first period but were held at bay by a solid defence.

Though playing down the slope in the second period Wivey failed to use it to the same effect as their hosts had, although they did get within four points of the home team.

Tom Chaffey took advantage of a loose pass to hack through and win the race to the line. Grant Davey converted and also kicked a penalty soon afterwards to make it 14-10.

Nailsea scored their third try late on through scrum half Jamie O’Sullivan with Rob Beaker converting.

Wivey were forced to make changes because of injury but still had chances with Chaffey especially going close.

The home side had the last say though, with a penalty from Tony Hill sealing Wivey’s fate.
