WIVELISCOMBE secured the points they needed to finish in second position but they failed to put the icing on the cake with Keynsham scoring a late try to win the game.

The teams approached the game in completely different ways – Wivey running the ball at every opportunity and Keynsham using their forwards against the smaller home pack to good effect. As a result, all the visitors’ tries were forward-orientated.

Wivey had secured a bonus point by half-time playing down the slope, using their pace to score four tries.

Captain Tom Chaffey pounced on a mistake by the visitors’ defence to cross in the corner.

Keynsham then had a good spell of pressure using their forwards in driving mauls. This ended with scrum-half Nick Lloyd scoring a try.

The home side hit back and scored three unanswered tries, the first from a spell of forward pressure which resulted in Jamie Marshall going over. Fly-half George Rowe converted.

Prop Matt Ellis was next to cross the line, going over from a set penalty move, then Pete Burrows scored Wivey’s last first-half try to put the home side 22-5 up at the break.

Playing down the slope, Keynsham put the home team under increasing pressure and they went on to score three more tries. Nick Lloyd crossed for his second and Phil Harvey and James Marsh added the others, with Gareth Deere converting all three.

Wivey had their chances but failed to add to their firsthalf tally and they now have to wait to see how many teams are promoted from Somerset 1 to the Premier Division.
