Wellington beaten in dour end of season afair

Tribute Cornwall and Devon: Crediton 12, Wellington 0.

WELLINGTON'S Past Players Association travelled to Crediton on their annual away day and witnessed a typical end of season match from two frustratingly poor sides with nothing to play for, both having just escaped relegation.

The hosts missed two early penalties before having their full-back sent to the sin bin for comments to the referee.

Despite the numerical advantage the Red and Blacks were unable take advantage, despite winning a reasonable quantity of possession from the slightly stronger home pack. Passes were poorly executed and receivers managed to mishandle those that were on target much to everyone's irritation.

With the pressure increasing Wellington lost the first of two players to the sin bin themselves as prop Ted Keeble was dismissed.

This allowed the home forwards to increase the pressure and they eventually executed a catch and drive at a line out deep in the Wellington 22 to trundle over for a five pointer.

By this time flanker Nick Pardoe had joined Keeble in the bin and the away supporters were beginning to worry that this would allow their hosts to get further in front.

However the home side were also guilty of imprecision in their play and their backs were simply unable to stretch the Wellington defence.

The Chiefs tried to take the game to the Devon side at the start of the second period and spent the best part of the first 20 in their opponents' half but the same problems as in the first half remained evident and they posed no real threat.

It wasn't until the final minute that a second score came. Pickard chipped over a ruck in the Wellington 22 and the chasing defence, who expected it to go over the dead ball line, were caught out by an outrageous bounce that speared back and flanker George Savage took the ball under the posts for the try. Pickard converted with the final kick of the match.

In reality the standard of this game was so poor that neither deserved to win and nil all would have been the fairest result and both teams would have been lucky to get that.
