Somerset refuse to rotate
SOMERSET'S director of cricket Brian Rose has said the club will not rotate players to keep their large squad happy.
And Rose also confirmed selectors will not have any problem with leaving out any of their foreign imports if other players are in form.
The Cidermen squad received another boost this week with the arrival of South Africans Zander De Bruyn and Alfonso Thomas, who have signed on Kolpak registrations.
Rose said some players are likely to become frustrated with not being selected and that they have to wait for their chance.
"In theory, selection should be an enjoyable headache for us this year in that we are lucky to have strength in depth and cover for most positions. Everybody, including our new signings, have come into it with open eyes.
"Some people might get down when they are not playing but it's my job and the coaches' job to pick them up and tell them to keep performing and when they get the chance take it with both hands.
"Although people are asking why we are employing overseas players, the fact is that we want to be as strong and competitive as possible.
"If it means that one or two of the overseas players are not selected because our first team is doing well then that is tough on them but we will keep on picking the side that is performing.
"The quality of the people that we have on the staff means that every side that we are putting out will be trying 100% because they know that if they don't perform there are others behind them who are very quickly going to be able to take their place."
"We have already seen the effect of this up at Old Trafford where four of our younger players contributed against Lancashire.
"We played Mark Turner and Michael Munday where a lot of people thought that we might have played someone else and they performed admirably which is great encouragement for me."
Meanwhile, Somerset have endured a frustrating start to the season due to the rain.
Their opening Championship match with Lancashire ended in a draw after losing time to bad weather, and only one innings of last Sunday's Friends Provident game at Worcestershire was possible.
WEATHER-permitting, Somerset have two Friends Provident Trophy games in three days. Tomorrow (Friday) they travel to the Rose Bowl to play Hampshire in a floodlit game (2.30pm).
The Cidermen defeated Hampshire in their first game, so they will be looking for revenge.
On Sunday, Glamorgan visit the County Ground (noon).
