SOMERSET CCC hosted a Cricket Writers Club luncheon during which a plaque was unveiled to honour former player and journalist Eric Hill who died in 2010.

Hill was born and brought up in Taunton and played for the county as an opening batsmen in 72 matches between 1947 and 1951.

He went on to serve on the committee and became a distinguished member of the press corps.

For a period in his journalistic career Eric Hill was sports editor for the Somerset County Gazette, after which he went on to report regularly on Somerset CCC games for the Daily Telegraph.

He also reported on England Test Matches in South Africa, Australia and New Zealand.

Hill was awarded DFC and DFM for his outstanding service with 544 Mosquito Squadron in World War Two.

For many years Hill lived with his wife Dorothy in West Somerset, firstly at Sampford Brett and later in Williton.

The inscription on the plaque which now has pride of place in the Taunton press box says ‘Placed in affectionate memory of Eric Hill, DFC, DFM (1923- 2010) Cricketer & Writer. He loved the game and Somerset for over 70 years.’
