THE steel structure for the new pavilion at the County Ground in Taunton is already being put into place.

Sean Johnson, site foreman for the Chard-based main contractors R.G. Spiller, said: “Things are going well for us on site and people can start to see that things are happening and the steelwork is going up.

"It will take us about ten days to get the steelwork up to where we want to be at this stage, after which we will bring in the hollow core planks which will take another ten days."

“After this the steel boys will come back and put on the next level of steel. This will allow us access and then we will put in the terrace units after which we will start building the block work and the panels and timbers."

“It’s always a nice feeling when you are putting something back almost into the same position as the one you demolished, but in a modern theme.

"It is going well at the moment and of course the weather has been very kind to us this winter. You can take the weather into account but you can’t control it, but up to now it has been good and we are where we would want to be.”

What can people expect to see when the season gets underway in April?

“Most of the structure will be in place and from the pitch side you will see the terrace units, the roof and bit of steel frame.

"However from the other side, where we are putting the Bistro is where we will be enclosing it with masonry and doing things that won't impact on the pitch.

“Now we have got the fixture list for the season we have put it on top of our programme to ensure that our work will not interfere with the cricket.”
